VortexB's Perspective

Hello!

I’m Trent(VortexB) and I worked on Dungeon Defense with linglings and NuTrinity. I joined this Jam to get back into jamming and game dev in general. However, I ended up learning a lot about working on a team while encouraging learning and also managing a team of varying skill levels.

Working as a team

Being the most experienced member of our team, I tried to lead and organize. Previously while working with others on jams, we split up work by types of assets. Splitting up code, sprites, and audio assets while working on more collaborative parts like game design together. Seeing as this jam focused on learning, encouraging teammates to improve their skills where they want to learn is important. This led to teaching my teammates where I could about different techniques in game dev, C#, and Unity. Balancing encouraging learning while trying to make a good game, managing different time zones, and working a full-time job, ended up being the most difficult part of this jam for me.

What I learned

The lessons I learned were to be more directly involved in what my teammates were trying to learn if I was knowledgeable in the subject. This would have caused less confusion and more coherency when later using their work, especially in a jam format when time is precious. I should also learn when to be firmer about having important things done in a way that’s best for our result in the jam. This would reduce the amount of assets that would need to be changed for the final version to be completed on time.

Personal Goals

I wanted this jam to encourage me to get back into game dev and I think it has! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to use any new techniques this jam but I had a lot of great ideas that I will look forward to incorporating into my next game which will hopefully be soon :)
